curly wing moth

she didn't metamorphose properly. don't know what kind of moth she is but i found her laying eggs on the floor of my garage. she's huge. fatter than my thumb. later that night i found a cousin of hers flying around in the moonlight out front. gorgeous.

come to think of it, there was a monstrous black spiny caterpillar crawling up my garage stairs some days ago. i scooped it up and put it out front by the garage in the soil by the gas meter. wonder if that was her in her youth. right size.

update: imperial moth. (thanks patrice)

That is an Imperial moth, one of the giant species... over 5 inches if the wings open properly...
