penguin bday

was invited to a nice gathering at black star coop. there were a disproportinate number of cool chicks there. in typical penguin fashion.

the erotic christian poet. i'm still not sure how you fit those three things in one boat, but her logic seemed sound.

the dentist who knows my dentist and isn't afraid to dish about it.

hot ride

hatched a wacky idea to ride to friend's house yesterday. procrastination resulted in a 230pm departure. a pawn shop sign said it was 104. my dentist this morning said it was 112.

little mr. rhea is a big boy now.

meander

i've never really followed the green austin bike route signs. i suppose they could be useful, but i always followed the routes i either learned while on the wheel of someone directionally gifted, or carved out through years of wandering. i ignored the signs.

tonight i used route 29 as part of my wander home and was quite pleased. now i have a new flat alternative to lake austin/scenic/matthews/pecos or exposition/balcones.

and what do you know, the bike route map is now a pdf online. i probably still have my 10 yr old paper copy that i picked up at freewheeling back when the caad 3 was new and shiny.

roadtrip

bridge in brady (i think) on the return at night. 17 hr drive straight through from durango. somewhere past there a really fat raccoon lost its life. sorry little guy. if it makes you feel any better, you effed up my bumper on my pristine car.

wearing the wounds of the horse gulch ride.

how do people live here. it's awful.

there isn't a bad backdrop in the entire state.

now i know what jeeping is. thanks ron.

they have excellent new mexican enchiladas in durango.

i didn't see the color organized tape. good coffee next door.

the bridge in brady (i think). heading out.

the moots. she smiles all the time. she has no idea where we're going.

a different kind of corkscrew

thinking i wouldn't be impressed watching former cart driver bryan herta get passed at laguna seca by alex zanardi in a technical turn called a corkscrew, i decided to see the movie. this was a story told to me by one of herta's childhood friends over lunch yesterday. folks, it's impressive.

zanardi later lost his legs in this horrific crash and now drives using a complex control cluster at the steering wheel.

all this in the context of something closer to home: we're getting our very own corkscrew. wonder if they'll let bikes on that part.

"The course under construction features a corkscrew turn modeled after the famous one at Laguna Seca and a tree-lined straightaway..."

the big boys get to race bikes at laguna seca during the circuit race at the sea otter classic. we're not likely to have national class racing here anytime soon (ever: remember the tour of texas and coors classic?), but at least the locals have another venue at which to play on tuesday nights.

"i like to take the couch on the highway"

it's been a long while since i visited this movie. figured it was time for a refresher. his drag race nyc is fun too. we've all seen it a million times, but it deserves a peek now and again. who can resist a good bike cam? his website ain't great, but people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

here's another version with proper engineering from a place where it's too cold in winter to do anything better.
